Built Upon a Rock
Luke 6:47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
Luke 6:48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
Hearing His Sayings
In this passage, Jesus is referring to a person hearing His teachings, and putting them into their life. What sayings is He pointing to? It can be assumed that the sayings that He spoke before this statement in chapter 6 of Luke’s Gospel are part of those sayings. And this chapter is an abridged version of Matthew chapter 5, 6, and 7, which contain more of Jesus’ teachings.
The gospels contain many other sayings or teachings of Jesus, also. So, they would certainly be included. And, since Jesus is referred to the Word of God in John chapter 1, then all of the written word of God would be Jesus speaking, since all Scripture is divinely inspired, the Bible tells us.
But we can know without any doubt that the things that Jesus taught during His earthly ministry are the sayings of Jesus.
Digging Deep
This passage says that the man is like a man who built a house, and dug deep. To hear the sayings of Jesus, we must put them before us and dig deep. To dig deep is to meditate upon them, to ponder them deeply, until the light of truth and understanding comes, at which point we are able to put them into our lives.
It Could Not Be Shaken
There is a divine strength and an ability to stand that is built into the lives of those who build their lives, their house, upon the revealed truth of God’s word, by hearing the sayings of Jesus and doing them. They stand when others fall as the result of the storms of life. The strength of heaven upholds them.
Take time to hear the sayings of Jesus today. Read them, think about them, ponder them, and allow them to become real in your life. Let your foundation be built upon the Rock of Ages, the Living Word Himself.
