Light in the Darkness

Psalm 112:4
Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.

Light

The word “light” in this passage means light in a broad sense, and can be translated in a variety of ways; natural light, daylight, light of a lamp, heavenly light, and light of instruction, to name a few.

Life Guidance

To the upright this light arises in the darkness. So, the inference we can make is that it is the light of what to do in a situation that has unclear options. It arises in darkness, in the place where solutions are not clearly and easily seen. In a nutshell, this guy knows what to do when thigs go wrong. Direction just comes to him. The LORD causes him to see an answer.

Never at a Loss

Of the promises of God, this is one of the great ones. It means that, as a believer, as a follower of Christ, that we should never be at a loss as to what to do in a situation. How does this benefit come into this man’s life? For the answer, we must look again at the first verse of the Psalm.

Psalm 112:1 Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

He Delights in the Word

This man is one who has great respect and reverence for the LORD, and he also delights greatly in God’s commandments, or the instruction of His word. He is a doer of the word, and not a forgetful hearer only. He delights himself in the word of God. And the verse says that he is blessed. In addition, this verse tells us that he is gracious, full of compassion, and righteous, or, that is, he is kind, merciful and just. He has cultivated godly heart attitudes.

Take time to delight in the word of God today and every day. The Bible says that the entrance of God’s word gives light. Jesus said that whoever believed in Him would not walk in darkness, but would have the light of life. Spend time in God’s word today, and let that light become part of your life.
