Delight Yourself Also
Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. (Psalm 37:4 KJV)
We often focus on the second half of this verse: "he shall give thee the desires of thine heart." But the promise begins with something even more important: "Delight thyself also in the LORD."
To delight in the Lord is to find our greatest satisfaction in knowing Him. His presence becomes precious to us. His Word becomes something we treasure and delight in. Pleasing Him becomes more important than simply getting what we want. And delighting in Him brings His blessing into our lives.
Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments. (Psalm 112:1 KJV)
Something wonderful happens as we learn to delight ourselves in God. The desires of our hearts begin to change. The closer we walk with Him, the more we begin to desire the things He desires. His priorities increasingly become our priorities.
God certainly cares about the desires of our hearts. He is a loving Father who delights in blessing His children. But His greatest gift will always be Himself. He is our eternal reward.
Take time to delight yourself in the Lord today. Enjoy His presence, treasure His Word, and thank Him for His goodness. When He becomes the greatest desire of our hearts, everything else begins to take its proper place.
