The Seed of Abraham
Galatians 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
Christ the Seed
There is a truth in this verse of Scripture that many Christians have not yet discovered. It’s a marvelous truth. And that truth is that those who have been redeemed by faith are the seed of Abraham.
One Seed, Not Many
Paul emphasizes in this verse that God did not promise to bless Abraham and his seeds, plural, but He promised to bless Abraham and his seed, singular. He is pointing out there is only one seed of Abraham, not many seeds, and that the one seed of Abraham is Christ.
We know from the Bible that Abraham begat Isaac and Isaac begat Jacob, who was later named Israel. Isn’t Israel the seed of Abraham? Well, yes, from a natural perspective. Israel is Abraham’s descendant. But Paul is referring here to the spiritual seed, the seed of promise, Jesus Christ.
The Bible tells us that God told Abraham that all the families of the earth would be blessed by Abraham’s seed. God has always known that the gospel would one day be preached, and that all men would be able to participate in the covenant of God, not just the Jewish people. Every time someone gets saved, redeemed by the blood of Christ, a family of the earth is blessed with the blessing of Abraham, the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
We are Abraham’s Seed
This verse points out that Jesus is the seed that God was speaking of when He made promises to Abraham. Christ is the seed of Abraham, the only seed, the one seed. Well, how does that make us as believers the seed of Abraham?
Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
If you are in Christ Jesus, if you belong to Him, and you are in Him, if you have received Him as your Lord, then you are Abraham’s seed, and an heir or recipient of the promises of God. Which promises? All the promises of God in the Bible.
Abraham’s Faith
We are faith children of a faith God. We walk in the footsteps of the faith of Abraham, who believed God, and it was counted unto his as righteousness. All the promises are received by faith. And one of the things we need to believe, or have faith in, is that we are the seed of Abraham, the ones to whom the promises of God were made.
Take some time today to find out what the promises of God are. They were written and recorded in Scripture so that one day the seed of Abraham would come and again believe God, even as Abraham believed, and receive the blessing that God promised would come upon Abraham’s seed. Walk in Abraham’s blessing today.
