The Secret Place
Psalm 91:1
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Abiding in Him
A study of the words that make up this verse gives us a deeper insight into what is being said. It could read as follows. He who sits in, dwells in, abides in, and inhabits the hiding place or shelter of the Most High shall lodge in and pass the night under the overshadowing protection of Shaddai, the most powerful One.
The Secret Life in God
There is a secret place in God. It is the secret place of fellowship with Him. Many know God in the sense of being saved by the salvation of Christ, being born from above in the new birth, but much fewer know Him in the fellowship He truly desires for us to have with Him.
Jesus talked about His followers praying in secret, fasting in secret, and giving alms, or helping others, in secret. He said that those who do these things in secret would be rewarded openly. This implies the notion of a secret life with God, in which the believer has secret fellowship with the LORD, a secret life that is seen by Him only.
Meditating in His Word
Time spent meditating in and pondering the word of God is part of that secret fellowship with Him. The Spirit of God speaks to our hearts as we ponder God’s word. Meditation in the word is a form of prayer in which the LORD does most of the talking. And pondering His word causes us to become doers of the word, which invites His presence into our lives in greater measure.
Divine Protection
Living the secret life with God puts us in the place of His divine protection. One of the later verses in Psalm 91 says that there shall no evil befall us, and neither shall any plague nor sickness come near our dwelling, because He shall give His angels command to keep us and guard us in all our comings and goings, in all our ways. That’s divine protection.
Enter the secret place of His presence today. Go into your private place and pray in secret. Skip a meal once in a while, and spend that time with Him. Help someone in need, and keep it between you and God. Meditate in His word, especially the words of Jesus, and become a doer of the word. Develop a secret life with Him, and abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
