The Deep Things of God
1 Corinthians 2:9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
1 Corinthians 2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
Eye Has Not seen
Paul, in his letter to the Corinthian Church, makes reference to a verse of Scripture from Isaiah 64:4.
Isaiah 64:4 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.
The Hidden Wisdom
Paul is discussing the wisdom of man and the wisdom of God. He is making a distinction between the two, and he is discussing the wisdom that is given to believers through the Spirit of God. In one place he refers to it as the hidden wisdom.
He Has Revealed Them to Us
Many have interpreted this passage of Scripture to say that it’s simply beyond our ability to comprehend the wonderful things God that has prepared for those who love Him. But Paul goes on to say that God has revealed them to us by His Spirit. And he points out that the Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. So, Paul , in reality, is saying that we can indeed receive and understand the deep things of God.
Meditation in the Word
How do we receive and understand the deep things of God? We do it through meditation in the word of God.
What is Meditation?
The word “meditation” tends to carry a negative connotation, because people relate it to the meditation that is practiced in Eastern religions, such as Buddhism and Hinduism. But that is not what Biblical meditation is. Meditation in the word of God is simply the pondering of the word, the contemplation of it, or thinking deeply into it, or reflecting upon it.
Searching the Deep Things
In 1 Corinthians 2:10, Paul tells the Church that the Spirit of God searches or examines the deep things of God. But the Spirit of God is God Himself, and He already knows the deep things of God. The Spirit of God knows all things about God. Why then would He search them? He searches them as we search them, for our benefit. He reveals spiritual truth to us as we are search out the word of God. He searches the deep things of God for us, as we’re searching. Jesus told us that the Spirit of Truth would take the things of Jesus and show them, or reveal them, unto us.
And, if this is true, and it is, then He can only reveal things to us as we are searching for truth, and as we take time to ponder the word of God. Wisdom has to be something we desire to have, and desire it enough to search for it with time spent in His word.
Proverbs 8:34 Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
Wisdom is not Automatic
Let’s think about that a little more. The Bible teaches that the Spirit of God dwells in those who believe in Jesus, or, that is, in those who are born from above, born of the Spirit. Yet not every believer is overflowing with spiritual wisdom and knowledge. Quite the contrary. Wisdom doesn’t come automatically and instantly, even though the Spirit of God is in the life of the believer. It comes only when we spend time with the Spirit of God around the word of God.
Start a new journey into the word of God today. There are great and lasting benefits that comes from time spent in the word. Take time to write down the verse or verses you are studying, and think about them, ponder them, and write down the thoughts that come to you during the process. You will be amazed at what the Spirit of God will reveal to you, a little here and a little there, until you become strong in spiritual understanding, wisdom, and faith.
